One fine day,
In a land so wide;
A child’s eyes widened,
With joyous pride.
To the zoo they went,
Excitement in the air;
A place of wonder,
With creatures rare.
Amidst the cages and enclosures
They saw a majestic scene;
An elephant, grand and mighty,
Standing in a space so serene.
The child’s heart raced,
As he saw the giant’s grace;
A creature of tales,
In this wondrous place.
Eyes wide like saucers,
Innocence on display;
The child marvelled at the trunk,
In awe, his body did sway.
The parents smiled,
At their child’s delight;
As the little one observed,
This majestic sight.
From the gentle giant’s eyes,
To the wrinkles on its skin;
The child saw a world,
Where awe would begin.
No longer feeble,
In the presence of the wild;
The child’s spirit soared,
Like the zoo’s own untamed child.
For in that moment,
Under the sun’s warm shine;
A child discovered magic,
In the form of an elephant so divine.

Context: Lately, I have been thinking of writing poems from personal experiences. As a child, I clearly remember seeing an elephant for the first time, and being mesmerised (and to be honest, terrified) by the sheer size of it all. Granted, I didn’t see an elephant for the first time in a zoo, but I guess this can be more relatable. I will continue to write more about first experiences and growth even as I am trying to find out a new writing style. In the past, this was my default style to write poems but in the last year or so I have drifted away to writing in a different style, to seem a bit more mature. This new series of poems will see me going back to my roots and finding the joy of writing simple and short-structured poems. Hope people enjoy that.
