It’s Okay

A few moments back, I was searching for some stuff on YouTube regarding my studies, when something popped up on my recommendations. It was the audition video of the now famous “nightbirde” Jane Marczewski on AGT, singing her original song “It’s Okay”. Most of us now know of her tragic story. It’s a travesty that such a gifted artist and such a pure soul was taken away from us like that. But what struck me as I listened to her song for the hundredth time, was how incredible the lyrics were. It’s been a while since I have listened to that song, but every time I go back to it, I just can’t but be amazed at how relatable the words are.

For most of us, living our lives is not dissimilar to navigating through an elaborate and endless maze. Twists and turns abound, and we are never able to figure the maze out no matter how hard we try. Sometimes these wrenches feel so overwhelming that we try to hide from the maze altogether. We try to sneak under a bush and hope that as time flies, the path will automatically clear up and we will see the finish line in front of us. But alas! Life doesn’t work like that. No matter how hard we try to avoid the problems that we face, those will still be there, and we will still have to deal with them.

That’s why Jane’s words ring so true to me. No matter what we do, most of the time we will feel lost. But we have to realise that this is part of the human experience, and almost every single person has felt that way at some point in his/her life. So rather than being hard on ourselves for not finding the solution to the problem that we face right now, we just have to understand that it’s okay to feel lost.

And it’s okay to be nervous. To be scared. To be sad. It’s all part of the journey that we traverse as human beings. So rather than trying to avoid the pain that we feel right now, it’s better to take cognizance of our emotions and deal with them in the most rational and compassionate way possible. We are not perfect. Nobody is. So there’s no point in being hard on ourselves for not figuring something out right now. The beauty of life lies in its uncertainties. The pain that we feel today may as well turn out to be a very small part of the much larger, more complex experience that we needed to have in this life.

So as I remember Jane today, I want us to be a little less hard on ourselves. I want us to realise that some things are just out of our control. And when something extremely unexpected comes about, it’s just human nature to feel lost. It doesn’t mean that we are weak. It just means that we are humans. So the next time you feel lost in life, just remember Jane’s words:

“It’s okay, it’s okay, it’s okay, it’s okay
If you’re lost, we’re all a little lost and it’s alright.”
