My New Mac

Since the first time I have used any sort of computing device, all Apple products have fascinated me. For one, most people in India don’t feel like investing that amount of money for a desktop/laptop. And then the OS is so different from android or windows that it seems foreign and mysterious. With that, comes the usual thought that these devices must be awesome, as most of us can’t afford those, and people who do buy them, never stop gushing about how good they are.

So when I bought my first iPad 3 years back, I was so excited to see what I was missing all these years. But in the beginning, I didn’t find anything incredible. Yes, the colours were brighter, everything was rapid fast, and it did what it said it does better than most devices. But I guess the expectation that I had was so high that only a magic wand could have met that. So I ended up selling it.

Fast forward to one and a half years back, I bought another iPad. This time it was because I needed it. I realised that I can do things in that device that isn’t possible in anything else. It mostly helped me with taking notes, but it also did so much more stuff. And this time, I got what all the fuss was about. And I have used that device every single day for more than a year now, and still, I am amazed at how incredible it is at doing so many different things.

So it was natural that when it came to replacing my old windows laptop which was becoming more of a liability with each passing day, I went for the Macbook Air M1 base model. And it would be an understatement to say that I was excited about it. I got it within 24 hours thanks to thanks to rapid online delivery. But again, as with my iPad experience, day one was a struggle. Especially for someone who has been a lifelong Windows user, the whole interface got a lot of getting used to. Some quirks of the OS also irked me. And the same day it got a new software update, which was cumbersome due to the slow network connection that day.

But as with my iPad, once I got used to everything, it felt like a dream. Everything is ten times faster. The battery is just incredible. I am getting ~17-18 hours even with constant web connection and notion, which is beyond amazing. This machine is probably the best that I have owned thus far, and I can’t be happier with it now. This just shows how wrong first impressions can be. Sometimes we build up things so much inside our head that at first glance of actualisation of that thought, it seems underwhelming. But once we give it a bit of time, we generally see the value in it. This not only applies to lifeless computers but also to human beings. We may not realise how awesome someone is on our first interaction, but if we are patient enough, with time we will realise their value in our life. That’s why it is always wise to stick to people a bit longer than we may want to at the time- for a bit of faith today, can go a long way in building an amazing relationship tomorrow.
